ARCHcoin (ARCH) is a decentralised, open-source cryptocurrency launched in October 2014 in Portugal. It is a pure proof-of-stake coin which pays a variable interest rate of between 3 - 20%, depending on the state of the ARCHcoin network. The project's main goal is to develop a centralised business model on top of a decentralised blockchain - by offering a platfrom for various investment niches (ARCHprojects) and allowing integration of advanced blockchain services. BitKey is a FREE, Debian-based live Linux distribution designed for Bitcoin users; it comes with specialist utilities to perform highly secure air-gapped Bitcoin transactions. It contains a swiss army knife of handy Bitcoin tools that support a wide range of usage models, including a few very secure ones which would otherwise be difficult to perform. The system boots into one of the three available modes: "cold-offline" - for creating a wallet and signing transactions; "cold-online" - for watching the wallet and preparing transactions; "hot-online" - standard usage but less secure as the private keys are known to the computer which is connected to the internet.

Did You Know? | Mt. Gox (2010 - 2014), based in Tokyo and managed by a 29-year old Frenchman, Mark Karpelès, was the largest and most popular Bitcoin exchange in the world. It went offline in February 2014 when the company behind Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy in Japan, leaving thousands of account holders without access to their funds. The reasons behind the collapse have never been explained. It was the largest single failure in the history of Bitcoin and many people predicted a brisk end of the cryptocurrency "experiment". Nevertheless, Bitcoin survived the event (and the subsequent sharp price decline), with users moving to other exchanges to trade the digital currency.

NEW • Cryptocurrency Release: Gulden (NLG) 1.5.5 |

An updated build of the Gulden (NLG) wallet client, version 1.5.5, is now available for download. This is a security update that was developed in response to the recent attempt to exploit the "51% attack" vulnerability in the Dutch cryptocurrency's proof-of-work algorithm; read this news post (in Dutch) for more details. The Gulden's way to reduce the risk of recurrence of such attacks is related to the way the blocks of transactions are "checkpointed", or verified for correctness at regular intervals. All users and miners are strongly encouraged to update their software and as soon as the majority of users run this version, the new security measures in the code will also be activated. Mobile clients do not currently require an upgrade. Here is the release announcement for Gulden 1.5.4 (in Dutch) which was quickly replaced by a bug-fixed version 1.5.5. The new Gulden clients for Linux, OS X or Windows are available for download from here: Gulden155-linux64.tar.gz (33.9MB), Gulden155-mac.dmg (11.2MB), Gulden155-win64.exe (12.9MB). For those readers who'd like a detailed look at the recent changes or who prefer to compile their own wallet clients, here is a quick link to the source code: v1.5.5.tar.gz (5.67MB). |

NEW • Cryptocurrency Release: Gulden (NLG) 1.5.2 |

The Gulden development team has announced the release of Gulden (NLG) 1.5.2, the latest stable build of the Dutch cryptocurrency project's wallet client. Although not a mandatory upgrade as the new wallet contains only minor technical improvements, it is still recommended that users stay up-do-date. One of the major changes in this version is a bug fix regarding the maximum transaction size. As a result, it is now easier to do transactions with larger transaction sizes which should greatly benefit those users who perform a large number of smaller transactions. Furthermore, it is now also possible to download a separate bootstrap file and to synchronise a newly installed wallet with the full Gulden blockchain faster. Read the brief release announcement (in Dutch) for further information. Download the new Gulden client for Linux, OS X or Windows: Gulden152-linux64.tar.gz (39.7MB), Gulden152-mac.dmg (12.6MB), Gulden152-win64.exe (13.1MB). As always, a quick link to download the source code: v1.5.2.tar.gz (5.66MB). This release also completes the recent move to rename the cryptocurrency from Guldencoin to Gulden, together with new domains at Gulden.com and Guldenweb.com. |

This is a mandatory upgrade. Some of the changes include: faster blockchain download and synchronisation; new multi-signature feature requiring more than one authorisation before a transaction can be executed; smart contracts for services that want to make use of the new multi-signature feature; the watch-only address feature is does no longer depend on blockchain explorers with associated APIs; built-in certificate that prevents virus scanners from raising false alerts; new block reward starting with block 250,000 - the reward will be reduced from 1,000 NLG to 100 NLG. Read the full release announcement (in Dutch) for more details. NEW • Cryptocurrency Release: Guldencoin (NLG) 1.4.0 |

The Guldencoin project has announced the release of Guldencoin (NLG) 1.4.0, a brand-new version of its wallet client and a mandatory upgrade that needs to take place before Sunday, 17 May (starting from block 213500). Originally a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that uses the scrypt algorithm for mining guldencoins, the new wallet has now changed its way of adjusting mining difficulty to a concept called "DELTA", developed in-house. This is in response to recent developments in scrypt mining, notably the increased activity by ASIC mining which concentrates the mining (and the rewards) into the hands of those who can afford to buy large pools of specialised hardware. The project's new difficulty adjustment mechanism defies not only ASIC mining, but also a phenomenon known as "jump pool" where increased computing power is applied at a "correct" time with high likelihood of coin generation. DELTA represents a response to this development, aiming to cope better with power fluctuations so that the stability of the network is improved. Further work, notably a possible switch to multi-algorithm mining, is also on the agenda for a future release. Read the release announcement (in Dutch) for more information. Download links: Guldencoin140 (10.4MB), Guldencoin140.dmg (11.2MB), Guldencoin140.exe (20.5MB). The source code is available from GitHub: v1.4.0.tar.gz (16.4MB). |
