Random Cryptocoin |

Ultracoin (UTC) is a decentralised open-source cryptocurrency forked from Bitcoin in January 2014. It is a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake where users can earn coins either by active CPU/GPU mining or by holding the coins. For mining, Ultracoin uses a variant of the scrypt hashing algorithm called "scrypt-jane" (also knowns and "scrypt-chacha") with progressive increase of memory requirements and a combination of hash functions to prevent ASIC mining (mining with highly specialist equipment). The coin launched with a 2% pre-mine. Original announcement.

BitKey is a FREE, Debian-based live Linux distribution designed for Bitcoin users; it comes with specialist utilities to perform highly secure air-gapped Bitcoin transactions. It contains a swiss army knife of handy Bitcoin tools that support a wide range of usage models, including a few very secure ones which would otherwise be difficult to perform. The system boots into one of the three available modes: "cold-offline" - for creating a wallet and signing transactions; "cold-online" - for watching the wallet and preparing transactions; "hot-online" - standard usage but less secure as the private keys are known to the computer which is connected to the internet.

Did You Know? | A 51% attack is a known design flaw in the Bitcoin software. Hypothetically, if a single entity contributed the majority of the network's mining hashrate, they would have full control of the network and would be able to manipulate the public ledger (blockchain) at will. Since the network is free and open, if someone were to have enough computational power (which would be extremely costly), there is no Bitcoin authority to stop them from doing things like preventing transactions from gaining confirmations, reversing transactions or allowing double-spending. Although feasible in theory, the current network mining difficulty levels have risen to such heights that not even large governments could amass enough computing power to mount a 51% attack. Cryptocurrencies using proof-of-stake as their consensus protocol are not vulnerable to this kind of attack.

Fluttercoin developer "ofeefee" has announced the availability of a new version of Fluttercoin (FLT), a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake cryptocurrency with an additional way of generating coins - a "proof-of-transaction" mechanism where new coins can be created simply by circulating the existing ones in transactions. Once again, the release notes provide scant details and the list of changes tells us that there have been just seven commits since the release of version 0.7.5.18 back in September 2015 (with the most recent one dated some 10 months ago). Perhaps the biggest addition is a new theme pack for the Fluttercoin wallet client: "Fluttercoin v0.7.5.19 release. Added RPC functions to control stake split thresholds, set to keep your blocks from splitting on specific sizes. Theme pack - extract to the application directory (fluttercoin/themes), relaunch client to select modified themes." Fluttercoin is currently ranked 482 by market capitalisation (according to CoinMarketCap.com), the project no longer has a working website and binary clients are provided for Windows only. Download: fluttercoin-64-windows-v0.7.5.19.zip (13.2MB), fluttercoin-32-windows-v0.7.5.19.zip (12.3MB). The source code is also available: v0.7.5.19-flt.tar.gz (2.26MB). |

Fluttercoin developer "ofeefee" has announced the release of Fluttercoin (FLT) 0.7.5.18, the latest update of the hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake cryptocurrency featuring a reward system called "proof of transaction" (where new FLT coins are generated by transacting in the currency). The new release was announced on GitHub: "v0.7.5.18 release." The brief release notes include the following items of interest: "Updated secure messaging to prevent client crashes on sync; fixed a bug in importwallet importprivkey related to wallet rescanning on birthday; enabled coin control by default; removed dust from block splitter; made a change to combine/split code." The updated Fluttercoin wallet client, built with the Qt 4.8.6 toolkit, is ready for download and available for Linux, OS X and Windows operating systems: fluttercoin-64-linux-v0.7.5.18.zip (6.71MB), FlutterCoin-Qt-v0.7.5.18-macosx.dmg (11.1MB), fluttercoin-v0.7.5.18-zip (13.2MB). As always, a quick link to the source code for those readers who prefer to compile their own clients: v0.7.5.18-flt.tar.gz (2.26MB). |

Fluttercoin (FLT) is a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake cryptocurrency featuring an interesting rewards system named proof-of-transaction (where FLT coins are mined simply by receiving or sending them). A new Fluttercoin-Qt wallet, version 0.7.5.17, was released yesterday and the client software is now available for Linux and Windows: "v0.7.5.17 release. Major feature additions: proof-of-stake blocks are now are eligible for proof-of-transaction; interchangeable theme system; theme supports menu header and menu icons; debug log tails when opened in GUI. Minor feature additions: Wallet address cleanup options (delete unused addresses); startup -synctime option; RPC addnode. Bug fixes: try more than the first address for a DNS -addnode; use a copy in place of mapMultiArgs ["-addnode"]; modernizing treatment of transactions; drop release times for CNode; P2P: improve RX/TX flow control; remove an assignment which is never used; make explicitly requested salvage operations continue if error; fix displaying of staking state and try to sync first...." The Fluttercoin (FLT) development team has announced the release of an updated Fluttercoin wallet, version 0.7.5.16, with a number of new features and bug fixes. From the release notes: "0.7.5.16 release. New features: Traffic Graph - Menu - Tools - Traffic Graph; referral option for Fluttershare - refer your friends to run the wallet, and enable Fluttershare Free; added '-change' option for daemon or Qt that forces change to a specific address, Fluttershare and coin control change systems override this, but this happens before it creates a random 'change' address. Bug fixes: fix unconfirmed balance if wallet contains conflicted transactions; fix notice on next block matures in 'a very long time'; fix notice in Fluttershare Free if system is in maintenance mode." Fluttercoin is a decentralised, open-source cryptocurrency that introduced the concept of "Proof-of-Transaction" which generates FTL coins every time they are sent or received. Download the new version from here (the OS X wallet wasn't available at the time of writing): fluttercoin-64-linux-v0.7.5.16.zip (6.65MB), fluttercoin-v0.7.5.16-setup.exe (17.9MB).
