BitShares (BTS) is a brand of open-source software based on the as blockchain technology as used by Bitcoin. Unlike bitcoins, which do not produce any income for their owners, BitShare can be used to launch Decentralized Autonomous Companies (DACs) which issue shares, produce profits and distribute profits to shareholders. As such, BitShares is about making profitable companies that people want to own shares in, thus creating return for the shareholders. The first DAC launched by this proces was called BitSharesX, a decentralized asset exchange based in Hong Kong. BitShares was originally launched under the name of ProtoShares (PTS); it was later renamed to BitShares (PTS) and "reloaded" in November 2014 by merging several products into BitShares (BTS).

BitKey is a FREE, Debian-based live Linux distribution designed for Bitcoin users; it comes with specialist utilities to perform highly secure air-gapped Bitcoin transactions. It contains a swiss army knife of handy Bitcoin tools that support a wide range of usage models, including a few very secure ones which would otherwise be difficult to perform. The system boots into one of the three available modes: "cold-offline" - for creating a wallet and signing transactions; "cold-online" - for watching the wallet and preparing transactions; "hot-online" - standard usage but less secure as the private keys are known to the computer which is connected to the internet.

Did You Know? | The hashrate is the measuring unit of the processing power used to perform energy-intensive computations to maintain the Bitcoin network (or the network of any "mined" cryptocurrency). It is commonly expressed in gigahertz per second (GHz/s). As an example, a hashrate of 1 GHz/s means that the combined Bitcoin network of connected computers is capable of making one billion calculations per second. In the first quarter of 2015 the Bitcoin network's hash rate oscillated around the 350,000,000 GHz/s mark, thus performing 350 quadrillion calculations every second. In contrast, the hashrate of Litecoin, the second most popular cryptocurrency, stood at around 1,200 GHz/s - just 0.0003% of Bitcoin's hashrate.

Eugene Shumilov has announced the release of Emercoin (EMC) 0.6.3, a new stable version of the hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake (PoW/PoS) cryptocurrency launched in December 2013. As publicised earlier, this release dramatically reduces the transaction and other fees for services provided by the project: "Emercoin wallet 0.6.3 released. As promised, we have released a new version of the Emercoin wallet, which introduces a 99% cut on the fee for transactions and new blockchain entries. Once we have a 95% consensus (950 new-version blocks closed over the last 1,000 instances), the network will switch to the new rules. The significant drop in process costs will make it much easier for blockchain-based businesses to adopt Emercoin. Changes: reduced name fee by 100 times; reduced minimum transaction fee and minimum transaction output to 1 subcent; fix rare crash that can happen when spending EMC amount close to your wallet balance...." See the release announcement and release notes for further details. As usual, the Emercoin wallet client is available for Linux, macOS and Windows; download (MD5) from SourceForge: emercoin-0.6.3-linux64.tar.gz (22.8MB), emercoin-0.6.3-linux32.tar.gz (22.9MB), emercoin-0.6.3-osx64.tar.gz (17.7MB), emercoin-0.6.3-win64.zip (23.0MB), emercoin-0.6.3-win64-setup.exe (13.1MB). The source code is also ready: v0.6.3emc.tar.gz (4.18MB). |

Evgenij Merenkov has announced the release of Emercoin (EMC) 0.6.0, a new stable release of the project's hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake (PoW/PoS) cryptocurrency. This version adds support for "merged mining" which allows miners to mine for both Emercoin and Bitcoin at the same time: "The Emercoin crypto-platform will officially switch over to merged mining in February 2017. This means that now all its users will be able to make money in two cryptocurrencies at once—Emercoin and Bitcoin. Advantages of merged mining: miners can make money in two digital currencies at the same time, with no extra burden on equipment capacity; Emercoin will become even more secure, as blockchain complexity skyrockets by over 500 times; an increased number of Emercoin users; increased trust in the network. Merged-mining blocks will be accepted once 950 of the last 1,000 blocks are mined by 0.6.0 clients." The new release also fixes a number of bugs; please see the release announcement and release notes for further information. Download (MD5): emercoin-0.6.0-linux64.tar.gz (18.7MB), emercoin-0.6.0-osx64.tar.gz (23.7MB), emercoin-0.6.0-win64.zip (32.2MB), emercoin-0.6.0-win64-setup.exe (12.9MB). NEW • Cryptocurrency Release: EmerCoin (EMC) 0.3.5 |

EmerCoin (EMC) is a decentralised, open-source cryptocurrency with some innovative features, such as geographically distributed servers for external IP discovery or an integrated DNS server for *.coin, *.emc, *.lib, *.bazar domains. Earlier today the project released a bug-fix update to its wallet client, version 0.3.5. This is a mandatory upgrade: "There was an attack on the EmerCoin blockchain; this was based on a vulnerability in the previous version of the PPC protocol, related to altering some signatures. The attack has been performed months before the fork date, when the attacker submitted 'tainted blocks'. The rest of the clients on the network downloaded those blocks from peers and noticed the difference. This is how a tainted blockchain can infect a large number of network participants. Thankfully, there are no financial consequences of the fork itself, the only inconvenience being that some customers were in a 'deadlock' state and could not go to the main blockchain branch. Re-downloading the blockchain from a trusted source resolved this issue." Read the release announcement on BitcoinTalk.org for more details. Download links: emercoin-0.3.5-linux.tar.gz (14.3MB), Emercoin-Qt.dmg (10.9MB), emercoin-0.3.5-windows.7z (17.7MB). The source code is available from GitHub: v0.3.5emc.tar.gz (1.65MB). |
