Storj is a project that uses the blockchain technology to provide decentralised cloud storage shared by users running the Storj software. Storj (STORJ), formerly Storjcoin X (SCJX) and released in July 2014, is an open-source cryptocurrency that supports the Storj network and is offered as a reward to those users who choose to provide storage space on their computers using the project's easy-to-configure Storj Share application. A separate software program, MetaDisk, is available to those who want to store files on the Storj cloud network. While Storjcoin X can be traded on major altcoin exchanges, it is not an independent cryptocurrency; it is issued on top of the Counterparty (XCP) protocol instead. The total supply of SJCX coins is limited to 500 million. Original announcement.

BitKey is a FREE, Debian-based live Linux distribution designed for Bitcoin users; it comes with specialist utilities to perform highly secure air-gapped Bitcoin transactions. It contains a swiss army knife of handy Bitcoin tools that support a wide range of usage models, including a few very secure ones which would otherwise be difficult to perform. The system boots into one of the three available modes: "cold-offline" - for creating a wallet and signing transactions; "cold-online" - for watching the wallet and preparing transactions; "hot-online" - standard usage but less secure as the private keys are known to the computer which is connected to the internet.

Did You Know? | Mining difficulty is expressed as the number of attempts required to find the correct solution (and to complete a block of transactions). In Bitcoin, a block is completed (on average) every 10 minutes which, by design, is a constant number. As a result, mining difficulty is a variable that changes depending on the total processing power of the Bitcoin network and (again by design) is adjusted every two weeks. In the early days of Bitcoin and during most of 2009, the mining difficulty stood at 1. By the end of 2010 it rose to 15,000 and it passed 1 million just six months later. The largest rise in Bitcoin mining difficulty took place in 2014 when it increased from 1.3 billion to 40 billion. In contrast, the mining difficulty of Litecoin, the world's second most popular cryptocurrency, stood at just over 55,000 at the end of 2014.

Coin Magi developer "joelao95" has announced the release a new version of m-wallet, a software client for the Coin Magi (XMG) cryptocurrency. Coin Magi is a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake (PoW/PoS) cryptocurrency originally launched in September 2014 as a fork of Peercoin. From the m-wallet 1.4.4.1 release notes: "This release solves the recent blockchain forking issue, including the follow changes: synchronizing checkpoint and master server introduced - this is to remove constantly checking on the misbehaving and IP banning, along with the 'block with too little proof-of-stake or proof-of-work' error; implemented a block generation rule, PoW/PoS blocks are mined/minted by following a pattern - 1) at least two PoS blocks minted between two consecutive PoW blocks, or PoW blocks generated every 10 minutes, 2) at least one PoW block is found in five consecutive PoS blocks, or PoS blocks generated every 3 minutes; difficulty adjustment will be changed to four-block exponential moving average." Coin Magi developer "joelao95" has announced the release of Coin Magi (XMG) m-wallet version 1.3.1, a new stable client for the project's hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake cryptocurrency launched in September 2014: "This is a major release designed to improve the overall performance of the wallet. Upgrading to this version is strongly recommended. All parties upgrading from versions prior to v1.3.0 should re-synchronize the complete block chain from the beginning. Changes: support for building Qt wallet and daemon on FreeBSD; added 'Mint' and 'About' menus to the Qt wallet; fixed price update for all operating systems; corrected the total amount on the transaction page; overall improvement of the Qt wallet appearance; removed pre-release message from the status bar; redesigned the icon set...." Coin Magi (XMG) is a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake cryptocurrency forked from Peercoin in September 2014 and characterised by strong efforts to prevent coin generation by large mining farms and specialist equipment. Earlier today the project announced the release of an updated wallet client, version 1.2.3.1: "New wallets (v1.2.3.1). Please make sure you have a backup of the wallet before launching the new application. All versions (Windows, OS X, Linux) are with Berkeley DB 4.8, and this will be the version we should use. There was a mistake in my Linux machine which built the Linux wallet with Berkeley DB 5, and I made sure the Linux edition is a statically linked build (compiled on Linux Mint; it'll be fine with all Debian-based variants, but I'm unsure of Linux distributions). Regarding the launch time of the current wallet, I believe this is not an issue of the database version, as I have used higher versions on my Linux box." Read the rest of the release announcement as published on BitcoinTalk.org. Download the new Coin Magi client for Linux, OS X or Windows from here: m-wallet-1.2.3.1-linux.tar.gz (12.0MB), m-wallet-1.2.3.1-macosx.dmg (16.2MB), m-wallet-1.2.3.1-win.zip (17.7MB). Finally, a quick link to the source code: v1.2.3.1.tar.gz (4.74MB). |
